A research team led by Dr. Stephen B. Liggett at the University of Maryland School of Medicine reasoned that strategies for combating rhinoviruses will depend on a better understanding of rhinovirus diversity and evolution. The team set out, using internal funds, to complete the genetic sequences of all known rhinovirus types. The results appeared in the journal Science on April 3, The scientists sequenced the complete genomes of 70 known human rhinoviruses and 10 others from nasal-wash samples of patients with rhinovirus upper respiratory tract infections.
The final collection, including the previously published sequences, consisted of full-length human rhinoviruses genomes. The researchers compared all the sequences to determine how they are related. Based on these relationships, they discovered that there may be up to 4 different species of rhinovirus.
Seek medical help quickly; possible treatments include antivirals if it is a result of a virus as well as steroids. Some people recover, while others need to take cardiac medications for life or even require a heart transplant. It affects children and teens and can include vomiting, confusion, lethargy, and other mental changes, to name a few. There is no specific treatment, and the outcome varies, with some people recovering completely, some having long-term neurologic consequences, and about 1 in 5 dying.
Caregivers should never give children and teens any medications containing aspirin when they have a cold, flu, chicken pox, fever, or similar illness because aspirin has been linked to Reye syndrome. If you're pregnant and suspect you have the flu, see your doctor. Treatment may include fluids, antipyretics to reduce a fever, and possibly an antiviral medication like Tamiflu or Relenza.
When it comes to the flu and pregnancy, the best offense is a good defense. Wolfe strongly recommends that pregnant women receive a flu vaccination. Encephalitis, a viral induced inflammation of the brain tissue, and meningitis , an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, are rare but very serious when they do occur. Influenza can very rarely lead to encephalitis with symptoms such as confusion, fever, and sometimes seizures or other neurologic problems.
Viral versions usually get better without treatment, but the bacterial types do not and must be ruled out, so seeing a doctor is crucial. Most people recover, though in some cases, neurologic damage like deafness, seizures, confusion, and memory loss can result.

Key Takeaways COVID long-haulers experience an array of widespread and debilitating symptoms even after the virus clears from their system, and latent viruses may account for many symptoms.
Because of the compromised state of long haulers' bodies, previously dormant viruses are reactivating and becoming chronic infections. Recent studies are highlighting the occurrence of these reactivations. Researchers are pushing for more testing and research on potential treatments. What Is a Latent Viral Reactivation?
Example: Chickenpox An example of how an initial infection can be different from a reactivated infection is the varicella-zoster virus.
What This Means For You Tracking dormant virus reactivations can help many long-haulers quantify, explain, and understand their debilitating symptoms. Was this page helpful?
