Sharing a folder in windows xp professional

Click where indicated if you want to go ahead and share the entire disk. The first time that you set up sharing, Windows XP displays a warning, urging you to use the Network Setup Wizard for safety. Click where indicated to either run the Wizard or to do it yourself.

If you have Service Pack 2 installed, the built-in Windows Firewall should already be running automatically, unless you turned it off. XP displays another warning. If you want the firewall enabled, select Use the wizard to enable file sharing. Otherwise, select Just enable file sharing. For maximum compatibility with all versions of Windows, use characters. By default, users on other computers have full access: they can read, write, and delete shared files.

If you only want them to be able to read files, un-check Allow network users to change my files. Creating file shares in Windows was easy: Right-click on the folder, click Properties, click the Sharing tab, and away you go. It worked right out of the box.

This is a more secure default configuration; users have to knowingly and actively enable file sharing for it to work. However, getting file sharing to work on a Windows XP computer that is a member of a workgroup can make for a wild ride. The wizard helps set up home networking features, such as IP address configuration and workgroup name.

Just click on the latter option to start sharing files and folders. Figure A Avoid the sharing wizard, which is targeted for home users. Figure B Again, refuse XP's persistence that you use the wizard. From here we can type in the syntax to the share. We want to connect to the share named Public on a computer named Verson. We have to select the drive letter that we want to use, and we have to enter the UNC path to the share.

We can find shares by browsing the network neighborhood. Here we can see all shared folder in a Workgroup. Right click Public, and select Map Network Drive.

This time the UNC path is already entered. The drive letter will be Y this time. The user name will be Kim Verson this time. We will get an error. We can not map the same share with different drive letter and with different user credentials. If we want to map the same share with different credentials, we have to disconnect existing network drive. To do that, go to the My Computer, right click network drive, and select Disconnect. Trough Share Permissions we can control who will have access to our shares.

These apply specifically to the network users. There are three levels of Share Permissions. Those are Full Control , Change and Read. Full Control gives us full control over all of the attributes of that particular share.

It allows us to modify files, to take ownership, and to change permissions of that particular share. The Change permission allows users to do anything with the files inside the share. The Read permission allows users to read and execute the contents of the files that are in the shared folder. With Share Permission we also have an Allow and Deny attribute. The Deny attribute explicitly denies particular permission. Deny will always over ride the Allow permission. This is useful when, for example, some user is a member of multiple groups, and we want to deny particular permission only for that particular user.

For local users, only NTFS permissions are applied. At this point, Everyone can read data in Manuals folder. The default permission is the Read permission, so we had to check Full Control permission manually. From the Network sharing and security group, check the option Share this folder on network in order to enable the the Sharing feature. If you don't want others to change or modify you files, you should uncheck the option Allow network users to change my files We suggest use not more than 12 characters for the share name , if any Windows 9x user would access this share folder Press OK to confirm this operation.

Now you can see an icon with a hand holding the folder. Connecting from client: First of all, logon the client machine e. Then we need to locate the host machine e.
